1. What is the nature of your business?
I am a mortgage consultant. I make mortgage shopping easy.
2. What inspired you to start your business?
I grew up in the financial services industry, so my experience dictated what I would one day be doing as a self-employed individual. My clients’ needs inspired me to start my own business. I became a sub-broker so that I could help as many people as possible with their financing needs.
3. Do you think being a woman has an effect on or informs how your run your business?
As opposed to being a male? I have no idea. Traditionally, men view decisiveness as an attribute and therefore make quick decisions whereas women tend to take time to consider the issue, and usually will come up with a better option in the long run. (I said usually here guys, like, once in a while, you gotta give me that). It definitely affects my business, in that I have many roles to play as a woman. I think I am understanding and patient. I don’t have knee jerk reactions; however, I can sharpen these elbows to use when I need them. I work hard and am constantly conscious of not making ego driven, self-serving decisions.
4. Is there a woman who inspires you?
I find all women inspirational. ALL! (Well . . . except 2, No Mum, you aren’t one of the two).
5. What is a valuable lesson that you feel has contributed to your success and who taught it to you?
My conscience has taught me many valuable lessons over the years and thereby has contributed to my success. Life experience has taught me how my conscience reacts to the decisions I make. Another valuable lesson I have learned is to remember to reflect at the end of the day and be grateful for all of the things I am blessed with. If it is meant to be, then it is up to me. Being accountable for all of my actions, words, and outcomes. Don’t forget to strive a little and get yourself out of your comfort zone – you never know what you might learn or who you might meet or what experience will come your way.
6. Any wisdom to impart?
What is for you, won’t go by you. You will not ever be given anything you cannot handle. You cannot be great at running ALL parts of your business, find people that are strong where you are weaker and make them part of your team, whether you trade service, or hire someone to do that part of the business you just suck at (some folks find marketing difficult, some find the financial end difficult, some find the production challenging). Love what you do and add your value to people’s lives.
