Women in Business – Steph Wagner of Element Creatives

Steph Wagner

1. What is the nature of your business?
I am in the business of ideas!  I help my clients market their businesses and promote their products and services with a creative edge.  The truth is, you don’t have to have a giant budget to have an effective marketing plan!

I’ve also just opened up a collaborative workspace in Port Coquitlam, where entrepreneurs and freelancers alike can book a desk for the day and work in a professional environment. A daycare centre with part-time and flexible spots for working parents will be opening up in the fall, so parents who need workspace have access to licensed childcare as they need it.

2. What inspired you to start your business?
Marketing and promotions has always been a passion of mine.  Being raised by parents who own small businesses, I grew up knowing self-employment was for me.  Seeing how hard my dad has worked to create his successful home building business is so inspiring – and I can safely say his example had a huge influence on me.  His work ethic is insane.

3. Do you think being a woman has an effect on or informs how your run your business?
I think being a woman in a small business right now is a huge deal.  The statistics of new businesses opening in BC that are started and owned by women are clear – we are here to stay and we are powerful.  I think the support we provide each other is so great, especially through networking groups and organizations.

4. Is there a woman who inspires you?
It’s so cliché, but my mom!  She raised two kids, completed her degree, ran the back end of my dad’s business and always had time for a social life and our lives.  She’s battled breast cancer and won.  She went back to school to become a mortgage broker and has since built up a great client base.  She’s a great mother, a great friend and an excellent Nana.  I love you mom!

5. What is a valuable lesson that you feel has contributed to your success and who taught it to you?
Keep trying.  Keep going, even when things get in your way.  Stick to your vision and push through any rough patches or obstacles.  Don’t give up on your dreams.  I actually learned that from you, Amanda!  You never give up!

6. Any wisdom to impart?
Make good connections and make yourself part of a community.  Getting business is great, but having a network of people who can inspire and maybe even help you along the way goes a long way.  And make sure to reciprocate the support to other women who might just be starting out.
