Samson’s Top 5 Tips To Running A Successful Business!

Being a small business owner is difficult; it takes a lot of time and effort to keep things running smoothly. Luckily I’ve come up with these 5 tips to help your business be more successful.

clockThe first step towards successfully managing your business is Time Management! I wouldn’t work for It’s Your Time if I didn’t think this was the most important step. If you switch back and forth between tasks or spending too much time wondering what to do next, a lot of time, and in turn money, can be lost from ineffective Time Management. I’ve written and entire article about Time Management which you can read here for more tips. We at It’s Your Time also offer a wide range of services to help you get on your way to managing your time effectively.

marketingThe next step is a successful Marketing strategy. As a small business you don’t have the big bucks to go advertise on billboards and TV commercials, but to be honest, that would be the worst use of your money. Part of the appeal of a small business is getting to know the owners and the employees on a personal level. I find that one of the most effective ways to bring in new business is by going out and meeting people and showing them why you are so amazing. We are members of BNI networking groups that we attend every week so if this is something you want to get started with, give us a call and we would be more than happy to invite you as a guest to one of our meetings.

hiringThe third step to a successful business in Hiring the Right People. As amazing as you are, your business will only ever be as amazing as you, unless you hire some stellar employees to take your business to the next level. The key to hiring to make your business stronger is to hire people that compliment your weaknesses. If you’re bad with tiny details, it might be a good idea to hire someone to take care of your bookkeeping, if you’re quiet and shy, it would be a good idea to hire someone outgoing who will develop great relationships with clients. The key is not necessarily hiring a bunch of other “mini you’s” but to develop a strong team of people that will succeed.

communicateFourth, you will need to Communicate effectively with everyone around you. This includes clients, employees, colleagues, and everyone in between. Communication is a key way to keep your clients coming back. If you have a good relationship with a client, they will have a stronger emotional attachment to you and want to keep coming back. Communication isn’t all about chit-chat and gossip though, you need to get down to brass tacks sometimes. The key to effectively communicating with clients is to ask them “When do you need this by?” and keeping them up to date with your progress on something so that they know you are working on it so they don’t have to worry about it. Communication with your employees is key as well; never assume something is implied with your employees. If you have certain expectations, make them clear and if they are doing a good job, let them know. Also, if you need help with a certain tasks, or something comes up that is not one of your strengths, talking to colleagues and asking for help is not a bad thing. People are actually flattered when you come to them for help because you understand that they are an expert in their field. As the owner of the business, everything you say and do represents the business so it’s important to portray the message you want to portray.

changeLastly, if anything that you have done up until this point isn’t work, don’t be afraid of Restructuring. I know people don’t like change but if you are consistently running into a recurring problem and can’t seem to fix it, it may be time to change the way you conduct business in order to avoid that problem. If you find you’re always losing money in a certain aspect of your business and making tons of money in another, shift your focus to the more profitable side of the business. Ultimately you need to do what’s best for your business and an attachment to the way things have always been done won’t help. Sometimes it takes some tough choice to be successful but you’re a strong individual and I know that you can make things work.
